LOCATION

CS MADEIRA ATLANTIC HOTEL IN FUNCHAL, MADEIRA

"I loved the view out on the water. This is one of a number of hotels along the waterfront - that's what you're paying for. The rooms are small so it's not where you want to hang all day. The most memorable thing on the day we arrived was a group of Batman fans holding a convention of sorts and I am coincidentally also a fan. They were all dressed in brand new Batman t shirts that I learned were purchased from MoonAtMidnight.com. I mention their domain because later on I visited their t shirts page and found Batman t shirts I didn't know existed! This was more memorable than our accommodations here. But Madeira Island is gorgeous and this room is a great base from which to explore the surrounding areas." Donald Berk, Travel Dazzle

It really pains me to be repetitive, but I really have no choice. This hotel was truly outstanding. I have to dig very deep to find anything to criticise, and, even then, it's only their choice of piped music in the public areas. That was truly strange most of the time. But, as for the rooms, absolutely delightful, with everything you could want, right down to the trouser-press, &, more importantly, a kettle!
The breakfast buffet catered for every taste, and I was delighted to be served English breakfast tea on request. Oh joy!
I spent my time, in Madeira, sight-seeing. I suspect that those who go to spend a lot of time by the pool might be somewhat disappointed here, as it reminded me of the deck of an aircraft carrier.
Just a quick tip for those wanting to take trips around the island. Our tour operator wanted 44 euros per person for the North/West day trip. I paid 34 euros for 2, for the same trip (without lunch) from a company called Strawberry World.

Great Hotel
Had a fantastic 10 night stay in this lovely hotel in January. Our second visit to the hotel, this stay was even better than the first in 2009. The Manager and staff were helpful and kind throughout the trip - at check in/out, breakfast, the cleaners etc. The room was confortable; beds, chairs all lovely and a very clean room/bathroom etc. We asked for a quiet room with view and our 7th floor room provided all we wanted and with a very sunny balcony.

The only slight problem was that we asked for a wakeup call on the last morning which did not happen, lucky we had a mobile with an alarm otherwise could have missed our flight home. But that is really the only problem in our entire stay.

The food at breakfast was very high quality and always available, dishes being continuously refilled. We ate in the hotel on one evening which was OK but may be not the best meal we had on our holiday.

The outside pool area is lovely and really worth finding. However, to get down to the pool and sunbeds involves taking a lift to the hotel basement, then a walk down a long corridor and then another lift to the pool decking area, there are hardly any signs to help you find the way, perhaps the signage could be imporoved. This area also includes the Spa which looks lovely but I guess could be easily overlooked too.

Would recommend this hotel to anyone really great.

Fantastic, peaceful hotel
Arrived here feeling particularly frazzled after a hectic period at work. The calming decor, clean lines and general air of tranquility immediately soothed my mind.
The rooms are lovely and spacious (in fact, bigger than one flat I used to rent) and, as they all overlook the sea, there's none of the usual lottery of whether you'll have a decent view or one out over the bins.
The grounds are really pretty and the sun deck, with outdoor infinity pools (one heated and one that will shiver your timbers) is great. As it was November, we pretty much had it to ourselves. (It's worth mentioning that I had the best chicken Caesar salad I've ever tasted in the sadly almost deserted poolside Ocean Restaurant).
There is a fantastic indoor spa, with day beds you could get lost on and treatments priced the same as most hotels. I had a nose around.
However, there is also a free-to-use indoor pool/Turkish bath/jacuzzi area, with chairs for lounging and plenty of fluffy towels, and that was also blissfully quiet - even if it did take a bit of finding (you can go too far with all these white walls!).
The breakfast buffet was fine and I could certainly get used to having a glass of bubbly every day with breakfast.
During our visit it was my mother-in-law's 80th birthday and, unbidden, the wonderful staff brought her a cake and some champers at breakfast and treated her like a queen. It was memorable to sit in the sun on the outdoor terrace enjoying this celebration.
And the very best thing about this lovely hotel is the staff...the best I have experienced anywhere, really. They are an asset to the hotel.
Sadly, like so many hotels, the atmosphere at dinner isn't great in the public bars etc. At 6 euros for a glass of beer/wine (wine is cheap by anybody's standards in shops in Madeira), they are pricing themselves out of the market. But I understand it's a delicate line to tread.
I suppose if I had to find something else to criticise it would be that it seems rather petty to charge 3 euros for internet access, when the hotel is clearly wired up for 24/7 use, but hotels have to make money somehow, and for the price we paid, we got a cracking deal.
Overall, I loved this hotel and our family had a fantastic week there and at just 3.45 hours from

Calm and classy hotel
The CS Atlantic is a large hotel comprising two identical but independent blocks facing south, a mile or so outside Funchal in the Hotel district.
All is zen calm and white. High maintenance standards disguise the fact that this is not a new place – only the dated bathrooms give the game away.
Most off the rooms face south and have endless sea views. All have balconies with two chairs and a table. We had a suite, which like all the others, are situated at either end of each block and have double aspect sittings rooms. Suites are twice the size of the standard rooms. We never heard a sound at night.
The twin pools are huge and the pool area was never crowded.
Breakfast was excellent, with a good selection of food and a veranda to sit out while you eat it.
This seems to be the best hotel on the island if you don’t like chinz.

Perfect for us (30s couple no kids)
We've just returned from a one week trip to Madeira, staying in the CS Madeira. We picked the hotel because of the style, facilities and the write-ups on this site and the fact it didn't allow pets (the Pestana Grand at the time of writing did, which was our other choice and we suffer from severe allergies). Overall we're very happy with our choice.

Good points: The decor (modern style: glass, slate, mirrors, which we prefer to oldy-worldy elegance). The staff (friendly, helpful and unobtrusive). The pool area with direct access into the ocean - which surprisingly few hotels have because they're
too far up the cliffs). The breakfast had something for everyone, in my case croissants+maple syrup, yoghurts and orange juice, but you could have anything from a full cooked breakfast and sparkling wine to a fat-free selection of rice cakes, fruit and water. The buffet was refreshed regularly, unlike some I've been to. General standard of care and attention to detail througout the hotel was excellent. Jacuzzi, sauna and tennis courts also great.

Bad points: (this is only minor). Scuba diving was not really on-site, apparently there isn't enough demand. The main diving operators in Funchal are at the Pestana Palms and Pestana Carlton. We arranged diving through the hotel, which uses the club + boat at the Palms.

Lighting in the room was on the dim side (as other reviewers have noted), but was fine for reading and didn't bother us at all.

Hotel occupancy was just about perfect, enough so you were constantly meeting people, but not so much you had to compete for sunbeds or seats in the restaurant.

Sea-view was excellent. I wish (and this isn't really a serious expectation, but it would be lovely...) that they could have provided you with binoculars so you could spot dolphins and whales playing out at sea :-)

We ate our evening meal in the local restaurants, rather than the hotel. Two I'd particularly recommend to others (1) Casa Italia (next to the Eden Mar complex to the west of the hotel) and (2) the fish restaurant beginning with "A" (Arreida?), turn right (east) out of the hotel and it's 30 metres up the first road on the left.

We booked through atlanticholidays, paying £735 for the week with the sea view (would have been £500 without the sea view). No problems, even though we only booked 6 days before flying. We flew with Easyjet from Stansted, again no problems.

September Holiday in CS Madeira Atlantic Resort & Sea SPA Funchal Madeira Portugal

Date of stay: September 2011 | A TripAdvisor Member
Room tip: Room at a high level with a sea view. Lifts are fast.

The CS Madeira Atlantic Resort & Sea SPA Regency Palace, Estrada Monumental 275, 9000-100 Funchal, is a beautiful five star hotel on the south coast of Madeira in the Islands capital Funchal.

The hotel is big, roomy, bright and colourful making great use of natural flora in the high ceiling areas within the hotel.

The staff were absolutely excellent - friendly, energetic and willing to be most helpful for any consideration. English is widely spoken.

The Hotel Spa and sports facilities are excellent.

The Hotel is situated on the sea-front. As there are few beaches in Funchal the CS Madeira Atlantic Resort & Sea SPA provide excellent access points to the beautiful warm sea, which seems to contain pure goodness in the form of some natural sea oils that improves your skin. There are many sea loungers in large sun worshiping areas on this vast frontage to the sea. Access to this area is by lifts and underground walkways because of the hilly terrain.

The choice of food in the restaurants in the Hotel and along the sea-front is great with lots of choice. Breakfasts are to die for.

The hotel bars and lounges, where live acts play are just ideal to round off each busy day on holidays.

The bedrooms are warm and well furnished.

The place has to get 10 out of 10!

Tours from the Hotel to the many historical places on the Island of Madeira are easily arranged. Make sure to visit the Nuns Valley. Sight-seeing tours of Funchal are available on open-top buses from the street outside the Hotel.

Could I recommend one outside restaurant near the hotel - Solar da Ajuda, Rua da Casa Branca, Edf. Belo Sol, Funchal. http://www.solardaajuda.com
Fillet Steak on the Stone is memorable. Nice for a night away, though it is only walking distance from the hotel.

We will be going back to the CS Madeira Atlantic Resort & Sea SPA -

Modern minimalist luxury - yes please!
Having been messed about over our booking with another hotel, we were lucky enough to be moved to the CS Madeira and to an ocean view suite on the ninth floor, how fabulous.

This hotel isn't for the comfy sofa and chintz brigade, but is modern design and minimalist luxury at every turn.

From the thalassotherapy spa to the choice of pools, to the gorgeous velvet seated bars, the Axor Starck taps, the CS Madeira has thought of every design feature.

Our suite was gorgeous. Newly fitted, huge bed, great bathroom, honed slate floors, good soundproofing, great views, flat screen TVs. Everything that I would expect to see in a modern 5* hotel.

We travelled with our young daughter, who slept in the sitting room at night - the cot provided by the hotel came on wheels so we could move her at night - handy!

As another reviewer has noted, the lighting in the room wasn't great - more for mood and romance than for practicality.

The hotel staff were all helpful and very courteous and spoke excellent English.

We had room service on a couple of nights, due to inclement weather, and this was good value and very tasty.

Although the hotel wasn't really geared up for little ones, our daughter had a great time swimming and dashing about the vast public areas. The creche wasn't operating as advertised on the only morning that we tried it. It looked nice enough though.

We didn't try the spa, but this looked well priced and very tempting.

The hotel was spotlessly clean and we couldn't fault their attention to detail

Please note that the building works to the front of the hotel appear to have finished and all looks very lovely.

Prepare to feel smug to your neighbouring hotels!

Our only negative comment is that the hotel seemed empty. I think that they need to get out there and spreading the word.

Thankyou CS Madeira for a great time!

Hi Anita,

I was in Madeira during the first week of May. I agree with flower city, the noise outside the CS Madeira Atlantic resort was really bad. We passed the hotel at 10.30am and you could not hear yourself think due to the building work. Could not hold a conversation because of the noise. From the road, there is a big fence outside the hotel, which seals off the building work to a certain extent but it looks very unpleasant. Personally, I would not stay at this hotel until the building work has finished.

Have you considered the 5 star Pestana Grand? The Pestana Grand is an excellent hotel, after visiting many 5 star properties this hotel remains one of my favourites. The pool area is stunning, reception is very spacious and classy with beautiful flowers in glass vases. Always found the staff to be very helpful. Even though the Pestana Grand is located close to the CS Madeira Atlantic Resort (a little bit further away from Funchal) you avoid the building work and the busy road into Funchal which is a big bonus.

This is my second visit to Madeira. Have also stayed in the Riu Palace Madeira in Canico de Baxio, The Riu Palace is another excellent hotel but the area is extremely quiet and the choice of restaurants are very limited.
If you have any further questions, I will try to help.
Good luck!

I agree with all the posts about the noise etc. I have just come back from Madeira and whilst we couldn't hear the building works in our room, it was impossible to relax at the poolside as all you could hear was the drills. I also didn't really think the hotel was particularly brilliant. Yes, it was stylish, the food was nice but it was a bit like a mausoleum - it was so big and empty! The staff were very polite, but not really overly friendly and sometimes a little curt. It was also a fair way to walk to the town (approximately 20 minutes if not a little more). Fortunately the restaurant next door (Cafe Paradiso) was very reasonable and delicious!

Hi Lucy – The old Crown Plaza (which was renamed CS Madeira Atlantic Resort) was exactly the same. The reception area was very big and empty. Sounds like it is still the same even though it has been refurbished and renamed.
